The California organization itself announced the death of "El Toro," who had been in intensive care for several weeks.
The legendary Mexican pitcher, Fernando Valenzuela, passed away Tuesday night at the age of 63 in a Los Angeles hospital, as reported by the Dodgers.
Valenzuela, the only player to win both the Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in the same MLB season, had been suffering from an illness that his family and the organization chose not to make public. He had also worked for many years as a Spanish-language television commentator for the Dodgers.
Valenzuela leaves an indelible legacy for Mexicans in the world's top baseball league, as well as within the Dodgers organization, which he led to a World Series title in 1981.
